Comfort Harps - Hand Crafted Curved-Back Harps

About Comfort Harps

Paula Miller, owner of Comfort Harps, has been building harps since 1997. Her love of the instrument began in 1979 when she saw her first "folk" harp at a music conference. From that first day she became one of many people that have said. . . "I always dreamed of playing a harp."

At first, we were know as Harps R EZ but in late 2004 changed our name to Comfort Harps. Many harp players have commented on the sound and beauty of these amazing instruments. From 1997 – 2004, Paula has built 43 harps and continues to enjoy the end results of the work and creativity of each instrument (yes, even the sanding).

About the Harps

Woods

We make our harps out of hardwoods. Each board of Eastern Maple and Walnut (chocolate gold) is hand-picked. Every harp has its own voice but typically walnut has a mellow or warm sound while maple is bright and clear with greater projection. Personal taste is what determines most individuals' wood choice.

Soundboard

The soundboard is made of the highest quality Finnish birch plywood. The sound is even and clear. The soundboard looks great and is proven for its strength and stability.

Sound

We had the unique opportunity to play side by side with some well know pedal and folk harps. The majority of the audience was more impressed by the beautiful sounds of the Comfort Harp as compared to the other harps (to Paula's surprise and delight).

String Spacing

String spacing is approximately 1/2" between each string. This is similar to concert harp spacing.

Tension

In designing the harps, string tension was a major priority. The tension is balanced for sound and engineered for the harps' durability. It is a little lighter than a pedal harp, which makes our harps less stressful on the hands and very responsive.

Strings

The strings are very important for a balanced tone. This has been determined, for each harp design, with a computer program. The strings are made up of different materials for each range.

  • Upper and Middle range: Nylon monofilament
  • Middle and Lower range: Nylon wrapped with nylon
  • Bass range: Steel fiber wrapped with copper (SFB)

Each harp includes a string chart indicating the string size and tension.

Finish

We use multiple coats of clear lacquer for dependable, long-lasting protection. This permits the natural color and beauty of the wood to shine through.

Warranty

All of our instruments have a two year warranty from the date of purchase against defects in materials and workmanship to the original owner. If there is a problem that is covered under the warranty we will repair the instrument at no charge. Shipping costs to and from Comfort Harps are the responsibility of the owner.
